What Are Catholics Reading This Summer?

Catholic writers, leaders and prominent figures share their reading lists for the warmest months of 2026.
It seems like only yesterday that we published our
Lenten reading recommendations, but here we are unrolling our 2026 summer reading list, which is altogether a very different animal than the books we recommended for the Season of Penance.
Summer books shouldn’t necessarily be unchallenging. In fact, it’s a perfect time for books that require the uninterrupted lounging-around time that summer affords, whether at the beach or pool, or in a hammock in the back yard. It’s the perfect time to get truly lost in a book — so lost that upon putting it down you feel a bit dazed, the way you might feel stumbling out of a movie theater into the blazing sun.
Those potentially-out-of-body-experience reads ought to be chosen carefully. To that end, we’ve asked a few Catholic writers, leaders and prominent figures what they are reading this summer. Here’s what they told us:

What God Values, World Despises
The world often misunderstands and undervalues spiritual pursuits, viewing them as wasteful. However, from God’s perspective, these pursuits are invaluable and essential for spiritual growth and becoming saints. We should embrace this perspective, focusing on God and living our lives for Him, regardless of worldly judgment.

3 .The tabernacle
And I came to a tabernacle, the inside of which was made of the hardest steel.
And entering in, I performed works of light where before I had done deeds of darkness.
In this tabernacle, therefore, towards the north, I set up a pillar of unpolished iron on which I hung small fans of various feathers moving back and forth. I found manna, and I ate it. Towards the east I built a fortification of square stones, kindling a fire within. Here I drank myrrh-flavoured wine with grape-must.
Towards the south I made a tower of square stones on which I hung red shields; in the windows I placed trumpets of ivory. And in the middle of the tower I poured out honey and prepared a …Hiroc’h

Former Modern Talking member Dieter Bohlen called Ukraine's victory in the war "the worst scenario"
Former Modern Talking member Dieter Bohlen stated that Ukraine's victory in the war is the worst scenario. He believes that Russia's defeat could lead to a world war.
Former member of the group Modern Talking has made a new scandalous statement regarding Russia's war against Ukraine. Dieter Bohlen believes that the worst possible outcome would be Ukraine's victory. This is reported by Berliner Zeitung, writes

The former member of the duo Modern Talking sharply criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He complained that he is troubled by Merz's current activities.
"Why do we need to build bunkers now? What are they planning there? It scares me. I don't build bunkers just for fun. I build bunkers when I foresee that they want war," said Dieter Bohlen.
The musician added that he had spoken with Merz several times before. The Chancellor believes in Ukraine's victory, but Bohlen …

Still building bunkers? Or enlarging them? Don't count on them being for any of us useless eaters. Including in the good ole USA. Even trump wants a bunker. Unless he already has one for himself. They are very angry they can't kill or replace Putin. I read and heard that they are still planning on replacing Putin. The Blessed Mother is protecting him well. As far as the one sided news goes. That's how propaganda goes. Destroy and block the truth, so the people get only what they want them to know. Which is their propaganda. Ukraine is done for if they keep up their craziness in Russia. Russia has held back long enough. Ukraine is going into the places already liberated and bombing the people and rebuilt buildings by Russia. They have been bombing Russia a lot recently. Killing many children and civilians. They are building up a war against Russia. They will make sure Putin is dead and replaced. So they think. Believing once he is gone they can go in and take what they want. As trump …Hiroc’h

Often we hear about St. Vincent et al. supporting one pope (Clement VII, Avignon pope) and St. Catherine of Siena et al. supporting another

Vincent asked first whether, in a time of schism, it was necessary to accept a single true pope or whether one could accept both or neither. Having established in his response to the first question that one must accept either Urban or Clement as pope, Vincent then posed the second question, namely, which of the two men elected by the College of Cardinals was the true pope. Having established that Clement's election alone was valid, Vincent then asked whether this truth had to be preached and revealed to the Christian people. To each of these three major questions, the friar assigned five additional questions. Vincent answered all 15 questions within a scholastic framework: he posed his answer; cited his rational arguments (rationes) and his authorities (chiefly Aquinas, named on several occasions, and the Bible, with some references to Augustine and Aristotle); raised objections to his own arguments; and then rebutted the objections.

Friday, 27th June 1913 New Frank Evidence Held by Dorsey
Friday, June 27, 1913
Solicitor Closely Guards Data of Which City Detectives Have No Knowledge.
New activity was injected into the Phagan case Friday when James Conley, negro sweeper at the National Pencil Factory, was removed secretly from his cell in police station and closely questioned by Frank Hooper, who will aid Solicitor Dorsey in the prosecution of Leo Frank.
The move was surrounded with the utmost secrecy. The negro was taken from his cell by Detective Starnes, and behind locked doors questioned anew in the room used by the Police Commissioners. He had been in for many minutes before the action became known.
Mr. Hooper asked Conley various new questions, and after the quizzing was over hurried away from the police station.
Dorsey Has New Evidence.
It was the first time that Hooper had questioned the negro.
That a mass of evidence which the Atlanta detective force had no part in getting, and of which the members have had …

Fr Nicola Bux to Pope Leo XIV: Do All Possible to Bridge Differences With SSPX

Fr Nicola Bux
Ahead of a Consistory of Cardinals this week, Father Nicola Bux, a close associate of the late Pope Benedict XVI, has written a filial yet firm appeal to Pope Leo XIV, urging him to swiftly “resolve in truth – and only in truth – the many ‘polarisations’ that run through the ecclesial body.”
In an open letter signed on the feast of the birth of St John the Baptist, Father Bux in particular calls on the Pope to build a bridge with the Society of St. Pius X before they consecrate new bishops without a papal mandate on July 1.
“Now that we are experienced in dialogue with people and groups outside the Church,” he writes, “should we not also, and above all, engage in dialogue within our own ranks, doing everything possible to ensure that none of those brothers and sisters whom the Lord has entrusted to us are lost?”

when God replied that Abel's blood cried to Him from the

Universal acceptance argument does not withstand the test of history.

St. Catherine of Siena is frequently quoted in her love of the pope of her day (as well she should be.) However, she is less frequently quoted in what she had to say about the antipope of her day. There have been 20-40 antipopes in history, so a discussion on this topic is not “anti-Catholic,” or “schismatic,” as the following account of St. Catherine clearly demonstrates.
[…]
In 1378, after the election of Pope Urban VI, the majority of Cardinals, Prelates and the people recognized Clement VIl as pope, even though he was in reality an antipope. Thirteen out of sixteen cardinals questioned the validity of the election of Pope Urban due to the threat of violence from the Roman people against the Sacred College, and even Urban’s few supporters immediately retracted their election, summoning a new Conclave at Fondi which elected the antipope Clement VIl. Even Saint Vincent Ferrer was convinced that Clement was the real pope, while Saint Catherine of Siena sided with Urban. If universal …Hiroc’h

Friday, 27th June 1913, Attorney Frank Hooper Sees Jim Conley for the First Time
The Atlanta Journal
Friday, June 27, 1913
Attorney Who Will Aid Solicitor Hears Negro Sweeper Recite His Story
Frank A. Hooper, the attorney who will assist Solicitor Hugh M. Dorsey in the prosecution of the case against Leo M. Frank, indicted for the murder of little Mary Phagan, interviewed James Conley, the negro sweeper, for the first time on Friday morning.
The attorney talked with the negro in the office of the police board for nearly an hour. Detective Starnes, who has been working under the direction of the solicitor, was the only officer with him.
Mr. Hooper simply made the trip to hear from Conley's own lips his story of the crime, and the interview is said not to have been occasioned by any new developments in the case.
Mr. Hooper said that he had the negro tell him the "whole story."
"The negro talks in a clear, straight-forward manner," the attorney declared, "and his statement had the earmarks …

De Mattei: Any Bishop Could Claim a Right to Consecrate Bishops in a Crisis

Italian historian Roberto de Mattei reflected on the announced episcopal consecrations by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) in an article published on CorrispondenzaRomana.it on June 24.
"State of Necessity" Cannot Be Self-Judged
For De Mattei, the state of necessity argument is simultaneously "the weakest and the strongest argument".
His question is: "Who has the authority to verify the existence of such a state and determine its beginning and end?"
He argues that if the FSSPX can independently determine when a state of necessity exists, then it also implicitly claims the authority to determine when that state ends.
That would place the FSSPX in a position of judging the Holy See rather than being judged by it.
De Mattei acknowledges that Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was not a speculative theologian or canonist, but a pastor of souls: "The decisive criterion for him was not the assertion of a right proper to the FSSPX, but the spiritual need of the faithful."
Can Any Bishop …Hiroc’h
